Hate Crime

Hate crimes and hate incidents can take place anywhere, at home, in the street, at work, or in schools.  Incidents can include threats, verbal abuse, arson, robbery, violence towards a person and damage to a person’s property. Hate crimes and hate incidents can have a devastating effect on the quality of life of its victims. It can also affect those who fear becoming victims and the communities in which they live.

A Hate Crime is any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s  race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; person’s disability or perceived disability or against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.

A Hate Incident is any non-crime incident which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s  race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; person’s disability or perceived disability or against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.

ALL hate crimes are hate incidents BUT NOT all hate incidents amount to a crime.

In Lancashire we are proud in the way we have engaged with protected groups and are able to demonstrate a number of ways in which we have engaged and assisted in the reduction of hate crimes and hate incidents.
