Quality of Service
Professional Standards Department
The Professional Standards Department is led by a Detective Superintendent and exists to promote and enforce the Standards of Professional Behaviour within the Constabulary.
The Professional Standards Department is made up of the Reactive Investigation Team, the Intelligence and Anti-Corruption Team (IACT), Support Services and Vetting.
Reactive Investigation Team - investigates allegations of gross misconduct, arising from public complaints and internal sources. It also provides support to divisions in respect of lower level cases, ensuring all cases are dealt with in a fair, proportionate and timely manner.
Intelligence and Anti-Corruption Team (IACT) - are responsible for managing the risk of corruption to the Constabulary and its employees. This includes collating, evaluating, analysing intelligence in relation to allegations of corruption against police officers and police staff. IACT is a covert unit and conducts investigations into misconduct and criminal offences. Corruption within the police service remains uncommon, but when it does occur it has a disproportionate and damaging impact on individuals, police forces and public confidence in the criminal justice system.
Support Services - provides administrative support to the Constabulary in respect of public complaints and misconduct cases, ensuring that legislative requirements are met and any subsequent misconduct proceedings for officers are dealt with in accordance with police regulations. Lessons learnt from cases are reviewed and disseminated as appropriate.
Vetting - The aim of the Vetting team is to ensure that, as far as the Constabulary is aware, only those with the highest standards of honesty and integrity are recruited and, thereafter, to ensure that those standards are maintained.
