PREVENT within education

Schools and further education
Lancashire Constabulary recognise the need to take a partnership approach to addressing the underlying issues that can attract young people towards violent extremist causes. The importance of engaging with today's children and young people if we are to make a difference in the longer term is imperative. The Department of Children, Schools and Families have developed a toolkit to help achieve this.

Schools can help make an important contribution, being a focal point for local communities and helping to build mutual respect and understanding. Exploring ideas, developing a sense of identity and forming views are a normal part of growing up. Schools can support young people in this providing a safe environment for discussing controversial issues.

From previous learning, Lancashire Constabulary has recognised the need for engaging with young people using external speakers, programmes or groups as an effective way of building awareness and skills for young people and encouraging debate.

For example, role play and theatre productions are often a powerful stimulus for learning about controversial issues and the subject of extremism is no different.

We have developed a Resource Pack in the form of a lesson plan to aid teachers in delivering this sensitive subject in schools and further education institutions.

'Not in my name' on DVD to be used as part of a resource pack with an accompanying lesson plan. The aim is to assist schools and further education institutes to discuss the sensitive issues that this production addresses around Islam, extremism and terrorism in a safe classroom environment.
