Reducing Casualties - Operation Pathway

Pathway is our County wide operation aimed at improving the safety of all road users. Our aim is to reduce the number of road traffic collisions through continuous education, prevention advice and enforcement where necessary.

Pathway focuses on:

  • Mobile phone use
  • Speeding
  • Seatbelts
  • Drink/drug driving
  • Insurance
  • Young Road Users
  • Motorcycle safety

Motorcycle Safety

Motorcyclists are some of Lancashire's most vulnerable road users. Despite them only accounting for 1% of traffic they make up 20% of all fatal road traffic collisions.

During the 2009 season (April - October) Lancashire experienced14 fatal motorcycle casualties.

Activity during the motorcycle season

Between April and October police officers across Lancashire will be speaking to road users about:

  • Their driving practices
  • How to stay safe and prevent collisions
  • Protecting motorcyclists

Whilst motorcyclists are asked to:

  • Consider their riding style
  • Consider their protective clothing
  • Assess the road and conditions
  • Ride defensively

Those drivers that represent an immediate danger to other road users by using their mobile phone, speeding or driving dangerously will be dealt with firmly through enforcement.

Advice for road users

Drivers

  • Consider riders and their vulnerability
  • Look out for motorcycles by checking your mirrors especially when turning right
  • Think Bike!

Riders

  • Maintain your concentration especially on your return home, statistics show this is when collisions occur.
  • Ensure that you are not tired
  • Drink plenty - dehydration affects your concentration
  • Don't switch off, switch on!

Be visible

Riders
