Eligibility

Whilst formal qualifications are not necessary, the requirements needed for a police Special are the same as any other member of police officer or staff.

Listed below are the basic eligibility requirements for those wishing to become a member of police staff.

Age

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a vacancy with Lancashire Constabulary.  There is no upper age limit.

Nationality

You must be a British citizen, an EC/EEA national or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with no restrictions on your stay in the United Kingdom. Foreign nationals and UK citizens who have lived abroad may have to wait some time for security and vetting clearance.

Residency

In accordance with Home Office guidance and the Association of Chief Police Officers’ National Vetting Policy, candidates are reminded that they must meet minimum residency criteria for specific periods immediately before an application is made.

Police staff roles require you to have been resident in the UK for a minimum period of 3 years immediately prior to making the application.

This is to satisfy the requirement to vet all applicants in an equitable manner as the UK police service does not currently have any means of facilitating vetting checks overseas, to the extent required of those who have been resident in the UK. Applicants who cannot be vetted, cannot be appointed.

Education

Please see specific requirements in the candidate specification for the vacancy you are interested in applying for. You will be required to provide certificates evidencing relevant skills and abilities if you are invited to interview.

Health

Special Constables encounter stressful situations, trauma, physical confrontation and work long hours on shifts. They need to be resilient enough to cope with the demands and pressures of police work. Applicants must therefore be in good health mentally and physically to undertake police duties. If you pass the recruitment stages, you will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and get it signed by your doctor. You will then undergo a medical examination to ensure you meet the BMI and health standards required. Your BMI must be between 18 and 30. You will also be required to provide a urine sample whilst at your appointment, this will be tested for any illegal substances.   

Financial Status

All applicants will have their financial status verified through a credit reference check. These checks are carried out because police officers and staff have access to privileged and highly sensitive information, which may make them vulnerable to corruption. Applicants to the police service should normally be free from undischarged debt or liability and be able to manage existing loans.  The emphasis should be on the sensible management of loans.    

Applicants who have outstanding County Court / Sheriff’s Court Judgements outstanding against them or are subject of a current Individual Voluntary arrangement (IVA) / Trust Deed should not be considered.  Applicants who have been registered bankrupt / subject of sequestration and their bankruptcy / sequestration debts have not been discharged should not be considered (but can be considered once three years has elapsed from date of discharge).  Debt Relief orders (DRO) will be treated in the same way as a bankruptcy.  A certificate of satisfaction will be required where appropriate. 

Criminal Record

You may still be eligible to join the police service if you have minor convictions /cautions, but there are certain offences and conditions that will make you ineligible.  When making our decisions we are guided by NPIA Circular 2/2011 and the Association of Chief Police Officers’ National Vetting Policy for the police.  If you have previous convictions and/or cautions and want to check whether they will preclude you please email VettingUnit@lancashire.pnn.police.uk providing your full name and any other names by which you have previously been known, date and place of birth, five year address history with dates and details of the sanctions received.

Due to the level of access and sensitivity of some roles/ posts within Lancashire Constabulary, they are designated as requiring an enhanced level of vetting. If appropriate, you will be notified of this requirement during the recruitment process.

Tattoos

Tattoos which are particularly prominent, offensive or undermine the dignity and authority of your role are unacceptable. This guideline also applies to facial piercings. Each case will be considered on its own merits.

Membership of the BNP or a similar organisation

Lancashire Constabulary has a policy of prohibiting any of our officers or staff from becoming members of the BNP, or a similar organisation whose aims, objectives or pronouncements may contradict the duty to promote race equality. If you are, or have previously been a member of the BNP or a similar organisation, your application may be rejected.

*The Chief Constable reserves the right to reject any candidate whom he may consider unsuitable for the police service.
