LANCASHIRE Constabulary is warning people in Chorley and Coppull to be on their guard against bogus workmen.

In the past week, two separate incidents have occurred where elderly residents have been confronted by men claiming work needed to be carried out on their houses.

The latest incident occurred around 1.00pm on Monday 8 February in the Devonshire Road area.

A man approached a house and told the elderly occupants he was from the water board and wanted to come into the house and check the water pressure. Once inside he stole a quantity of cash.

He is described as white, around 5" 8' tall and was wearing a dark fleece top, light trousers, a light coloured baseball cap and white trainers.

Detective Inspector Paul Rudd said: "These types of crime are despicable in that they target the elderly and more vulnerable people in our communities. I would urge people to be extra vigilant when so called officials call at their homes - always check ID and if possible contact the company the caller is claiming to be from to check their details."

Police have issued the following advice to help people avoid falling victim to bogus callers:

• STOP - Before you answer the door, stop and think if you are expecting anyone. Make sure your rear door and any other doors leading outside are locked before you approach the front door.
• CHAIN - Open the door with the chain or door bar in place. A door bar or chain acts as a useful barrier when talking to unexpected callers. Talk through a window if you can.
• CHECK - Always ask for ID. Genuine callers will always have identification. If you are still uncertain, phone the organisation and confirm the person's identity. Genuine callers will be happy to wait.

DI Rudd added: "I would also urge people who have elderly relatives and neighbours to be alert and pass these messages on. I would also like the community to be aware of visitors and workmen at elderly people's houses, for example roofers and tree cutters and not to be afraid to approach them and check their credentials."
