Volunteer Police Cadets
Lancashire Constabulary Pennine Volunteer Police Cadets was launched in March 2004.
Cadets are ambassadors for Lancashire Constabulary and contribute to local community projects and initiatives.
Cadets learn about the role of the modern Police service and organisations/agencies that we work with and have the opportunity to learn new skills and to make new friends.
"The Volunteer Police Cadets Scheme aims to give young people a chance to express their feelings on policing issues, and to take part in an exciting and memorable experience."
The objectives of the Cadet course:-
- Engage young people who live or attend education in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.
- Foster a better understanding between the Police and young persons.
- Engage as broad a cross section of the community as possible regardless of race, sexual orientation, background or educational ability.
Who can join?
Application to join Pennine Volunteer Police Cadets is open to anyone aged 16 - 19 (incl.) years of age on the 1st March of the year of the course they are applying for.
Applicants must live OR attend education in the Burnley, Pendle or Rossendale areas.
Applicants who complete the application to the required standard will be interviewed and from this successful candidates will be given the opportunity to become members of the Volunteer Police Cadets.
The Course
The course is 38-weeks in duration and takes place between April - December each year and consists of two elements:-
- Regular inputs by specialists Police departments and partner organisations
- Community Events
Cadet Inputs
The Cadet inputs take place every Tuesday, between 7pm - 9pm in Burnley. As well as providing an insight into the Police service he Inputs are specifically designed to address youth related issues such as targeting and reducing young victims of crime, sexual exploitation and reducing young road casualties. The inputs provide skills and life experiences which are invaluable in relation to career development. The inputs include:-
- Powers of arrest
- Stop and search
- Diversity/Hate Crime
- Teenage Sexual Health
- Road Policing Unit
- Visit to Dog training school
- CID Investigation
- Mock Trial - Burnley Magistrates Court
- Crime Scene Investigation
- Recruitment
- Special Constabulary & PCSO
- Police Physical - Spirit of Sport, Burnley
- Conflict Resolution
- Drugs awareness
- Terrorism table top exercise
- Lancs Fire & Rescue - Burnley Fire station
- Outward bounds course
- Academic input - Key Skills - Delivered by Burnley College
- Coroner's Officer
The Cadets assist Neighbourhood teams with local initiatives which increase public confidence and satisfaction through increased visibility. These activities provide a positive role model to other young people.
Community Events
The community events previously undertaken included:-
- Community Project - At the start of the course the Cadets decide on a community project and agree a plan of action. previously the Cadets have created two community gardens and decorated community buildings. (The Cadets are working on a long term project, in partnership with Pendle Community High School, to maintain and improve Lomeshaye Marshes Nature Reserve for the benefit of the students and local community. The Cadets are carrying out heavy duty gardening work, digging out ponds, cutting down trees and clearing paths for wheelchair access).
