Firearms Surrender

Firearms surrender poster imageFirearms poster imageThe national Firearms Surrender takes place from 12 – 29 May 2022

We want to remove as many illegally held or unused guns as possible from across Lancashire to reduce the risk of them falling into the wrong hands.

During the surrender people can hand in:

  • Illegally held or unwanted guns and ammunition, including antique firearms
  • Imitation firearms and air guns
  • Unwanted guns and ammunition
  • Items which you may have inherited from a relative or found and you aren’t sure what they are or what to do with them

This is a surrender and NOT an amnesty.

You won’t need to identify yourself, but Police Staff will ask questions about any firearm or ammunition to ensure that they understand how best to handle it safely.

Should a weapon be surrendered, and it is established that it has been involved in criminality, then an investigation may ensue, which could lead to possible criminal proceedings.

All items of property handled by the police service could be submitted for a forensic examination.

Where can I take my firearm?

This is an opportunity for people to dispose of their unwanted or unlicensed firearms at any local station with a staffed front desk. You can find a list of station opening hours below.

Please ensure that firearms are covered from view at all times and in particular when entering public or police premises. This is particularly important if you are using public transport. Once there, inform the member of staff you are there to surrender a firearm BEFORE you reveal the weapon.

Please do not hand your unwanted firearms or ammunition to a Police Officer or Police Community Support Officer in the street. Officers and PCSOs are not equipped to receive these items in the street, which could cause unnecessary anxiety to the public in the vicinity.

If you are unable to attend a police station to surrender your firearm or ammunition, please contact us on 101 so we can make an appointment to collect it.

What happens to the firearm once I've surrendered it?

The firearm will be made safe and destroyed, unless it is proved to be linked to a crime, then it will be kept as evidence for any future court case proceedings.

What if I want to surrender other weaponry, knives, grenades, etc?

If you wish to surrender other items, please call 101 to discuss this with our Force Control room who will be able to advise you of the best way to safely dispose of your unwanted weaponry.

We take reports of gun crime very seriously, if you have any information about the possession of an illegal firearm or criminal activity relating to this type of crime call 101 or make a report online here. You can also anonymously report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Safety advice:

ALWAYS assume that the weapon is loaded.

AVOID handling the weapon as much as possible.

NEVER attempt to unload the weapon or 'Make it Safe'.

NEVER allow children to touch any weapon or ammunition.

ALWAYS point the weapon in a safe direction.

NEVER point a weapon at another person.

ALWAYS keep firearms and ammunition separate.

DO NOT surrender a firearm/ammunition to a Police Officer/ PCSO in the street or open public area.

NEVER attempt to take an uncovered weapon out in public.

DO NOT use public transport to surrender a weapon if it can be avoided.

NEVER abandon any weapon/ammunition.

REMEMBER you do not have to disclose any personal details when surrendering any weapons or ammunition if you do not wish to do so.
