Information notice: Changes to miniature rifle range laws

A 'miniature rifle range' is a venue used for target shooting with small-calibre rifles (currently .22 rimfire or below).

As part of the Firearms Act 2023, there have been changes to the laws for these ranges in the UK. These took effect from 1 May 2025:

• Operators of miniature rifle ranges must now hold a valid firearm certificate.
• Only rifles chambered for .22 rimfire cartridges or below qualify as 'miniature rifles'.
• It is an offence to possess components of ammunition with the intent to manufacture illegally.

What this means for rifle range operators

• Operators must undergo police checks and suitability assessments to obtain a firearm certificate.
• Only .22 rimfire cartridges or below may be used at miniature rifle ranges.
• Operators must ensure no unauthorised ammunition manufacturing occurs on their premises.

What this means if you use a rifle range

You can still take part in target shooting at a certified range without having your own firearm certificate. However, the operator must be certified.

This gives beginners access to safe shooting sports in clubs, schools, colleges, game fairs, and activity centres.
